Wombbath - Beyond The Abyss
Release Date: March 14th, 2025
Pulverised Records
Wombbath is an old Swedish death metal band that has been releasing new music since their comeback after 22 years in 2015. "Beyond The Abyss" will be their 5th album since their return to the scene. Influences from greats such as Dismember, Entombed and Edge Of Sanity are apparent in their sound while slight modern tinges can be heard as well. Sparingly used elements such as violin, keyboard and saxophone sit uniquely along side the deep and nasty elements classic Swedish death metal is known for. "Beyond The Abyss" is slightly melodic in some parts without losing that crusty edge that supplies most of its appeal. The song "Faces Of Tragedy" stands out for me despite the entire album being a confident display of old-school viciousness. The slow chunky parts are interwoven nicely among the occasional speedier aspects and catchy vocal delivery. Progressive parts are present in Wombbath's sound reminiscent of their Edge Of Sanity influence. "The Damned And The Slain" especially showcases some of these inspirations. It really grabbed me at the 1:40 mark in the song. Aggressiveness gave away to an almost chill atmosphere before heading back into the mayhem. These aspects are not over-used though and do not detract from the vintage death metal sound they are striving for. I have copies of their previous albums, "Agma" and "Tales Of Madness". In my opinion their upcoming album is superior to these previous releases. I enjoy the production more on "Beyond The Abyss". A deeper and perhaps warmer sound fills out Wombbath's sound nicely on the newest album. "Agma" was excellent. "Tales Of Madness" was a little too raw for me. Wombbath have made an excellent album here that will have me returning to it again. Check it out.
