Weed Demon - The Doom Scroll
Release Date: January 31st, 2025
Electric Valley Records
Trudging through a thick atmosphere of relentless haze , Weed Demon cultivate a thick and vibrant take on the doom/stoner genre. With an emphasis placed on slow to mid paced grooves they don't dwell endlessly on ideas. There are diverse influences present here from doom to stoner and thrash to death metal. Being sure to always serve the song they don't shy away from any heaviness. Trance like states can transform quickly into bludgeoning assaults on "The Doom Scroll". The guitars are thick with tones that you can almost taste. Minus the drummer all the other members share vocal duties. This makes for a varied listen as the three voices add their distinct sound. Some ideas are sung, growled, or shouted depending on what the song called for. All the original material on the album is brought down to end with a laid back bluesy song called, "Dead Planet Blues". By far this was the highlight for me given how it sat with the entirety of the album. Interestingly, the last track is a confident cover of Frank Zappa's "Willy the Pimp". This was done very much in the style of Weed Demon. I'm happy that they made it their own. Weed Demon haven't reinvented the genre but have earned their place within it through their class and style. As a doom fan I will need to check out their back catalogue now.
Weed Demon are a Columbus, Ohio band that have been around for a decade. Prior to "The Doom Scroll" they have released an e.p and two other full length albums. Check them out!
