Vorax - Volcano Shock
Release Date: June 27th, 2026
Independent

Vorax is a Zurich-based death metal band who prides themselves in an old-school approach to their sound. In addition to the music the band chose to create "Volcano Shock" without the aid of modern studio methods. The band states that, "The album was recorded, mixed, and mastered largely analog, using self-restored studio equipment from the 1980s and 1990s, tracked and mastered on tape, and mixed through a vintage Studer console." All this was also done at the hands of the band themselves in a personally built studio. Vorax features members from, "Messiah, Omophagia, and Death Kommander" As a band that is entirely D.I.Y., they believe the sound captured breathes of vintage death metal. Full and real.

Bombarding the listener from the start, "Magma Ocean" strikes furiously with aggression and catchy rhythms. Easily defined ideas are not lost within chaotic ambitions but are readily available for a bloody musical immersion. Perhaps somewhat "warm" in production, the music is easily listenable without any grating tones. "Devouring Raw Flesh" is definitely old-school from the beginning. Assuredly simplistic on purpose, Vorax promotes quality songcraft over instrumental acrobatics. The song is catchy but not overly redundant in its ideas. Next, the title track "Volcano Shock" has slower musical strategies apparent in its delivery. Moving heavily from place to place, it embodies a menacing juggernaut of sonic magma. Destruction is certain along its path of massively powerful force. "Burning Lava" is an obviously appropriate continuation of the previous track. Stripping the landscape with its ruinous nature, the song represents a mixture of engaging elements and raw brutality. Every instrument cutting through the mix well in their contribution to musical madness. Continuing along the band's path of annihilation, "Hunter Killer" is another song of clearly articulated no-frills death metal. Enough havoc for the underground fan and ample moments of musical clarity for the general metal fan. "Flight Of The Pteranodon" starts with a infectious rhythm. Pulling the listener into its grasp, the ideas present are felt with a directness that makes the song enjoyable. Returning to the old days of straightforwardness that is missed sometimes in the excessive pandemonium of some modern death metal. Next, "Rein Supreme" has a controlled hostile energy. Grave in its purpose, the song is a mass of forceful malice. Full in its enraged entity, the track reverberates with a turbulent energy. The album finds closure with "The Great Dying". Another mid-paced song that carries itself with an intense might. Complete in its essence, the personality of the music encompasses quality songcraft with ferocity. My favorite track on "Volcano Shock", and a wonderful ending to an album that was a joy to listen to.
