Maddie hears laughter and screams she knows only she can hear and seeks solace in her friend Kitten, a giant cat she talks to every night. Kitten tells Maddie about a new boy who will be arriving at school and warns her to stay away from him. His name is Hansel and he is totally hot, and Maddie is shocked when he asks her, the freak of the school, out for coffee. He turns out to be a jerk and a terrible kisser, and Maddie grudgingly agrees to be his girl. This causes a problem because Maddie is totally crushing on her friend Jason.
The stress of Maddie's bossy and overbearing mom makes the screams and laughter worse and now Maddie is afraid Kitten is angry with her about Hansel. What will Maddie do about Hansel and Jason? What will Maddie do about her mom? And most importantly, what will she do about the screams, laughter, and now Kitten?
