Old Forest - Graveside
Release Date: December 6th, 2024
Soulseller Records
Pulsating with vintage blasphemy, Old Forest are out to recapture the majestic glory days of black metal. They took a deliberate approach of imperfection to try and relive all our old favorites from that time frame. The band's sound does an excellent job of incorporating all the sinister vibes one should expect from black metal back then. I can hear nods to the cold youthful anger of classic albums put out in the mid to late 1990's. While conjuring images of dungeons and unforgiving winter landscapes, Old Forest are burning with unforgiving hatred.
Despite being from the United Kingdom they rightfully belong screaming from the forests and mountains of Norway on this release. No doubt this all transpires in the proper attire of chainmail, spikes and corpse-paint. Old Forest are not reinventing a genre here. They are giving new life to a special period of time. All of us that were around to take part in that newness remember the specialness of it all. "Graveside" could stand strongly along with all your favorites from back then. Among the primordial base of musicianship classic black metal is known for, Old Forest also uses keyboards and the occasional singing to compliment their anguished screams. None of these elements detract from the frigid sound they have created. It adds a fullness to a style that can be one dimensional at times. Old Forest has been around since 1998. This marks their 8th album according to the press release. I will find myself venturing into their back catalogue now. Check it out.
