Nekrodawn is a Swedish death metal band that features members from prominent bands such as, Grave, Centinex, Hypocrisy, Interment, and The Crown. Following the release of their first album, "Sculpted By Torture", they are seeking to expand on the viciousness while still retaining a sound that is a combination of both the old and the new. With a focus on both brutality and an emphasis on quality song-writing, they are proving they are a force in modern death metal.
Forcefully entering, "Neath Skies Of Iron" storms the listener with a brutal bludgeoning. Focusing on a craft refined through previous musical ambitions, they understand the nuances of a carefully constructed violent rawness. Without letting up they attack at the heart of soulless modernity. Reminding everyone where these sounds were birthed, their sound holds true to the old sound they sought to embrace. "Massacre Eternal" concentrates on inspired song-writing expertise. Savagely catchy, they know where the sweet spots are in a well written song. Without sacrificing the crusty abrasiveness, Nekrodawn knowingly dwell in an area where a musical ugliness is warranted and desired. Next, the title track, "Covenant Of Carnage" is a writhing slab of death metal purity. Not for the weak, the essence of the track is an unrelenting stabbing of the victim begging for mercy. Blood-splattered and beaten, the song is an ode to all the soon-to-be destroyed that lay at the feet of the bringers of violent retribution. "Liberty's Pyre" charges forth with darkened aural fury. Plastered on the walls are the gory remains of purposeful casualties. Following suit with the previous tracks, infernally conceived movements stain the pure with their grotesque identities. After a menacingly uneasy beginning, "Feeding The Greed Machine" soon develops into a wonderfully torturous and infectious song. Not sacrificing their intended purpose, the track is a reeking display of death metal superiority. "Crowned Devourer" takes on all with a harsh mid-paced start. Evolving into treacherous exhibition of anguished-filled brutality, the band forges a path into the fathomless depths of human cruelty. Next, "Condemned to Existence" has an infectious quality that leaves the listener begging for further punishment. Highlighting an anguished craftmanship, they effectively dwell in a cunningly constructed stronghold of barbarity. Forging further sonic tools of destructive force, "Claws Of Pestilence" is a bone-grinding sensory assault. Rendering the listener captive to cold-blooded raids, they are at the mercy of a song that moves darkly between differing emotional states. "Incarnate Doom" is a sinisterly wonderful ear-catching song. Pivoting numerous times throughout the song into differing feels, the ideas here present a sickly engaging journey. Perhaps my favorite song on, "Covenant Of Carnage",
it is a ominously superior track on the album. Next, "Thy Spineless" moves from its foreboding beginnings to one of the strongest transitions on the album. Eliciting a response that is both exciting and gripping, its a moment that proves Nekrodawn's potent handle on their songcraft. Also present is a juggernaut of moderate tempo sections and thrash-infused attacks. Without a break, "Drones of Deceit" cuts in with a down-tuned start. Short-lived at 1:06, it is a quick excruciating beating before the last song, "Desolation Reigns". Cruelly it comes to life with memorable shifts between engrossing choruses deliberately fierce rhythms. Nothing is left to prove here since the band's superior claim to death metal authority is already stated. The song manifests both past and present with a callous personality that can rarely be created by those that hadn't experienced the glory days of the genre.
