Mindreaper - Withering Shine (...Into Oblivion)
Release Date: December 2nd, 2024
Death Age Records
Mindreaper are a German metal band that encompasses a variety of metal genres. All these are intelligently combined into well crafted songs resulting in their forthcoming album, "Withering Shine (...Into Oblivion)". There is a definite melodic death metal sound to this band. Drawing from classics such as Edge Of Sanity and some Dismember, there is enough grit present to ward off their over-polished contemporaries. Thrash and some groove metal are present as well, being common traits of this style. Hooks are plentiful, but not in a over-saturated display akin to pop music. Keyboards are also gracefully utilized occasionally to compliment the songs in a non-distracting manner. The production on "Withering Shine (...Into Oblivion)" was handled by Andy Classen (Legion of the Damned, Belphegor, Graveworm and many more). The band hoped that his services would add some savagery to their sound. I agree that many of their peers in this style have lost touch with this aspect of their sound. On Mindreaper's newest release they successfully harbored that classic sound lost to some come the 2000's. Enough dangerousness pushes through here amongst the melodies and catchy ideas. Short of doom metal, Mindreaper play my next favorite style of metal that I was obsessed with in my youth. "Withering Shine (...Into Oblivion)" is a testimony to the greats of melodic death metal while respecting their own autonomy. Check them out.
