MALPHAS - Extinct
Release Date: April 11th, 2025
Soulseller Records
Malphas is a blackened death metal band from Switzerland whose 4th album of controlled chaos will be released April 11th, 2025. These four musicians attack the thresholds of extreme metal with an abundance of hate-filled fury. Finding common ground that has been explored in the past, Malphas blend death metal and black metal together with a subtle melodic flair. Accompanying the obvious talent is an apparent inspiration from 1990's artists within the blackened death metal style. Normally I don't put bands as a point of comparison on here but I can hear specific nods to In Aeternum and God Dethroned. In a world of studio magic producing some sterility in metal, Malphas have an "organic" sound that I miss from 30 years ago. Each of their nine songs on "Extinct" stand out as wickedly memorable. There is only enough catchiness to attract your attention and their music doesn't get lost monotonous predictability. The ideas present on "Extinct" are varied enough to construct an album that is "alive" with boldly sinister intentions. Catering to the diminishing "underground" of extreme metal, Malphas are a wrathful entity that remind us of the bewitching musical potency that resides in our community. As an attractive quality of their sound, the guitarists built an exciting experience with propping each other up within each song. Most of their parts would stand solidly on their own, but together create an entirely new dimension in sound by utilizing both instruments wisely. Through harmonies and melodic ideas on top of scorching rhythms they keep me engaged throughly. Occasionally used "clean" guitars and piano parts also add to the ominous nature of Malphas.
Support them, they are worth your time.
