Jarl - Trümmerfestung
Release Date: December 12th, 2024
Trollzorn Records
Jarl are a German black metal band originally formed in 2004 and found new life come 2016. With the addition of new members they completed a 2019 self-released album titled, "Wiedergänger". Their newest album, "Trümmerfestung", is the next step of evolution for Jarl. This album has a down-to-earth feel. Through a simplistic approach the band is able to let the melodic dueling guitars shine expressively. I am a fan of metal bands putting the song first. Jarl capture black metal's sinful sound forcefully without subjecting themselves to overproduced musical antics. Amongst the tastefully intertwined speed picked guitars resides a strong rhythm section adding to their devilishly memorable sound. Jarl chose to add to the mist-laden groundwork previously laid years ago instead of transforming black metal entirely. I believe they still retain a strong identity though instead of merely mimicking the sounds of old. Aspects I enjoy from this release include the 4:16 mark on "Dreck Und Rost". I like the way this style of black metal moves from faster passages to slower ones. The dynamics present on "Trümmerfestung" as a whole carries an appeal for those who may get bored with too much repetition. Melody is at the forefront of their sound. Layered on top of the ice-cold backdrop are some exciting ideas that make Jarl truly standout. They possess the right mixture of accessibility and viciousness to make for an exciting but impure experience. Support it.
