ISTAPP - "Sól Tér Sortna"
Release Date: March 6th, 2025
Trollzorn Records
Istapp are a Swedish melodic black metal band who released their initial demo in 2005. They since have released three other full length albums of blackened fury. "Sól Tér Sortna" is their fourth album that is to be released in March from Trollzorn Records. Istapp, (meaning a long piece of ice formed by dripping water), is a fitting descriptive word to encompass their dark sound. Catering to a modern black metal delivery, the music on "Sól Tér Sortna" is crisp and executed with precision. Slower mood building parts are entwined with faster melodic ideas that provide a catchy and varied performance. Keyboards also play an important part in Istapp's sound. They aren't all-encompassing but add an additional element to fill out their sound. Very slight folk metal components can also be heard on "Ragnarök" The raspy sounding vocalist presents a frigid portrayal of anger with an occasional sung performance. Istapp choose to convey their message in Swedish. The album's title translates roughly to, "the sun turns dark". Applying this expressive phrase to their music is an adequate depiction. Obviously forged In the depths of cavernous ice caves, Istapp could be a soundtrack to a wintery Scandinavian landscape. For fans of melodic black metal, Istapp are a true representation of the genre. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
