HESPERIA - Fra Li Monti Sibillini
Release Date: 01/17/2025
Hammerheart Records
Hesperia's album is a dedication to the culture and history of Italy. The sole musician of this band explored pre-Roman literature based on the, "Roman poem Aeneid and the Roman era with two volumes about Rome". He combined inspiration of these works with traditional 90s Norwegian black metal. The title of the album translated means, "Black Medieval Winter Over The Sibylline Mounts", and is an area in Italy ripe with various legends of witches, hidden areas, and alchemists. "Fra Li Monti Sibillini" is an interesting combination of Medieval sounding interludes combined with frigidly aggressive metallic wickedness. Hesperia's album is a vessel that sends you back in time to the Sibylline Mounts of old to experience its dark history. Among the traditional sounding instruments Hesperia do a magnificent job capturing the essence of 90's era black metal. Despite all the intertwined ideas, this album flows well. It exists as a cohesive entity and should be experienced in its entirety as opposed to individual tracks. Throughout the album you can feel the magic and hardship that would reside in such a cold and mountainous landscape. Clocking in at an hour and 18 minutes this album is a worthwhile time investment. It shouldn't be consumed half-heartedly because it is a genuine black metal experience. Take the time with a good beer, or coffee like me, and sit back and undergo a trip inspired Italy's bygone stories.
