Gods & Punks - A Shrine by the Sea
Release Date: July 3rd, 2026
Electric Valley Records

Gods & Punks are a Brazilian progressive stoner rock band that will release their 6th album on July 3rd through Electric Valley Records. The band started in 2013 by brothers Alexandre and Pedro Canhetti. Inspired by their love for stoner rock, the band's name comes from a Monster Magnet song. They state the melodies of Rush and the heaviness of Black Sabbath as main drivers of their sound. This album has two longer compositions both running 21 minutes and 12 seconds. On the first part "The Lighthouse" they state that it: " traverses a wide dynamic range, moving between atmospheric sections, slow doom passages, and Sabbath-inspired riffs. The track also features guest vocals by Andrea Ruocco (ex–Spiral Guru)." On the second part, "Poseidon" it, "takes a more fluid and psychedelic approach, with a calmer tone that gradually builds intensity while maintaining a strong sense of space and immersion." As with many modern bands the album was written and arranged remotely by the bands various members. The guitars and drums were tracked in Rio de Janeiro by Rodrigo and Gabriel, the bass was recorded by Pedro in Santos, and the vocals were performed by Alexandre in Paris, France.

The first part of the album, again, under the banner of "The Lighthouse", is divided into "waves" as is the second part. The first wave here starts with a chill feel before a thunderous bombardment. Alternating between relaxed states and heavy guitars, there is a neat diversity in their sound. Dynamics are abundant here offering a well constructed track. The mandatory gritty guitars of the genre are an excellent representation of their style. This continues to be evident on the "second wave" on a track that increases their momentum slightly at the start. A crushing sound returns though after the initial strike. All this is wrapped in a hazy fog of denseness that is both comforting in its thickness and inspiring in its soul. Perhaps even a cue to a subtle evilness is at the heart of what's present. Continuing further on with the essence of the previous track, the "third wave" is wrought with a musical severity. Guitar leads also compliment the huge sound of its base of slick-styled riffage well. The song gently ends before the "fourth wave" enters. Exciting for its impassioned delivery, the song is vast in its inspired energy. Losing yourself in the sensation present is easy when the motion of nostalgic sounds wash over you. Flutes paint the track with a relaxed effect too. The "first wave" of the "Poseidon" section continues with a tranquil feel. Slight tension builds throughout the track as it heads further out into its immensity. All the developing is realized when the "second wave" starts. After the heavy opening, more soothed attributes are known. This rotates between the two throughout the track a few times before an uplifting bridge changes the song's course. The songcraft present in the band is confidently displayed with their diverse movements across all their ideas. The "third wave" and "second wave" blended together with such flawlessness that I initially missed the change. The album as a whole can exist as its own cohesive entity. More akin to a trip taken as opposed to defined beginnings and endings until the finale. The album ends with the "fourth wave" adding closure to an immersive experience. A song and an album that is best experienced in solitude for the full effect. From the original casting out to the bewildered return, realization of the encounter is only understood after mental processing takes place. Sustained for awhile when all is done is the after-effects of blissful tranquility and huge mountainous auditory excursions. The trip meant to be taken a few more times. Great album.
