Euphrosyne - Morus
Release Date: March 21st, 2025
Black Lion Records
"Morus" is the debut album by this Greek post-black/doom band. Post-black metal is an interesting genre with its ability to construct mood building atmospheres while retaining a bleak feeling throughout. This follows closely with other "post" genres such as post-rock and post metal. All of these being some of my favorite styles to lose myself in whether they are uplifting or dark in nature. Euphrosyne's debut album focuses on death and the transition from awareness to life's inevitable closure. All this was inspired by the death of guitarist Alex Despotidis’ mother in 2017 from cancer. While retaining definite post-black influences and subtle doom elements, Euphrosyne branches out I believe into other territories too. Through their exploration of inner states attributed to life's struggles they come to a creation that embodies so much more. The music confidently paints a symbolic backdrop to our internal hardships while opening a wide space for vocalist Efi Eva to shine. Euphrosyne offer a unique experiential force that seizes emotional control. Combining sorrowful pianos with dense guitars and hard-hitting rhythms, they assist the screams and beautifully sung vocals in a thick mass of torment. The mixing and mastering was done on this album by Psychon (Septicflesh). The final product of "Morus" is a polished entity but not lost to lifeless over-production. Euphrosyne is a transcendental experience that is enjoyed further among numerous listens. Like any album worth this kind of immersion, there are aspects in "Morus" that are captured fully after a deep relationship is made with the listener. Corridors of unexplored territory are always available as one seeks out new paths within each song. Whether this be through Efi's vocals or the exciting musical landscape accompanying her. We feature many excellent albums on our site. This one could be one of my favorites.
Euphrosyne got their start in 2021. They quickly released two songs, “Thorns Above The Skies” and “Rattus” to a positive response. After acquiring the help of George Gazis (bass) and Stelios Pepinidis (drums) they recorded an e.p. titled, "Keres". They have since shared the stage with bands such as Rotting Christ and Sylvaine. All the music on "Morus" was written by guitarist Alex Despotidis and the lyrics by vocalist Efi Eva.
