EREB ALTOR - Hälsingemörker
Release Date: February 7th, 2025
Hammerheart Records
Blasting onto the bloodied sonic landscapes honoring old Scandinavian viking lore, Ereb Altor have created a confidant ode to their forefathers. They are from Hälsingland which is a historical province in Sweden. Therefore, embedded in their being is a connection to the culture that they are embracing. As expected in viking metal, there is a call to tell the stories of times past through music that inspires battles and excessive mead drinking. This is of course done in the halls of ancestors while embracing a strong sense of heritage. Musically, Ereb Altor have the expected sound that viking metal tends to possess. Among the catchy vocal elements of a sung and screamed style is the backdrop of an uplifting yet aggressively metallic delivery. Similar to others in the genre they rely heavily on an excellent combination of black metal and perhaps subtle power metal vibes. Filling out the sound on "Hälsingemörker" is also the restrained use of keyboards that assists everything else well into place. The production is full and allows all their elements to come through without and muddled or overpowering aspects. Viking metal short of the aforementioned power metal is one of the few genres that can enliven a listener with a delicately constructed positive emotional response. For the aggressive music fan in all of us there is still enough anger present to inspire and promote our inner rage.
Ereb Altor got their start in the early 2000's and have released consistent music since. They have played many prestigious European music festivals and have even shared the stage with my personal favorites Borknagar. Viking metal I believe has an audience well versed in all its excellent output throughout the years. Ereb Altor can stand well alongside all the genre's greats.
