Ephialtes - Melas Oneiros
Release Date: November 1st, 2024
Black Lion Records
This is an amazing album. Ephialtes capture everything I like about this genre of metal. Rooted in a melodic death/black metal style, they effectively produce an exhilarating experience. Time was spent on "Melas Oneiros" crafting solid and interesting music. Ephialtes are catchy but not drowning in predictable monotony. Melody is at the forefront of their sound that caters to my personal taste in metal. This is not to say that this overshadows a sense of aggressive urgency in their sound. I would say "Melas Oneiros" takes inspiration from late 1990s and early 2000's melodic death/black metal before pop elements made their way into the genre. The guitars are at the forefront of their sound and are accompanied by keyboards that fill out their sound. The use of keyboards are not gratuitous though and add depth to their music. The vocalist is very midrange in his delivery and coincides nicely with occasional clean vocals. Production wise, Ephialtes is very crisp and well put together. They immediately drew me in with their confidence and talent. I enjoy Ephialtes and I think you would too.
Ephialtes are a Polish band that was formed by Quazarre who is associated with Devilish Impressions, Asgaard and Crionics. The band's name is an ancient Greek word that translates into "nightmare". The press release goes on to say further that this refers to, "the popular belief that nightmares were personified as figures who climbed over the body of a sleeping person. In this way, Ephialtes represents “the one who leaps upon”—the nightmare." Ephialtes are a band that can unwaveringly stand among the greats of the genre. Support it!
