Entgeist - Welk
Release Date: June 26th, 2026
Self-Released

Entgeist is a German black metal that got their start in 2014. Since then the band has evolved into their current lineup that has existed since 2018. The band has done numerous local shows around their area as well as festival appearances. The band states that they create their music with, "dissonant, icy guitars (that) collide with haunting melodies and striking solos, creating a dense and atmospheric sonic landscape." They stay true to their German language lyrically exploring themes such as, "isolation and urban life." Prior to their upcoming album. "Welk", they have released, "Monochrom" (e.p.) in 2017 and their first full length album, "Res Gestae" in 2022.

After capturing an emotion of a dank cavernous room stripped of life at the onset, "Am Rande der Finsternis" (On The Edge Of Darkness) sets the stage with a furious storm afterwards. Meticulously moving from melodious modern black metal to a cold and frightful technical anger. Though black metal at its base, I sense other musical influences present as well. "Gefangen in der Zeit" (Trapped In Time) has a great opening guitar idea. Perhaps slightly progressive, Entgeist comes from the newer style of black metal. Not afraid to explore everything that a song can offer instead relying on the raw simplistic nature of the classics. Memorability is important to their songcraft while still keeping the material excitedly interesting. Next, "Auserzählt" (google translated: Told Out) continues the bombardment, unafraid to move in and out of different ideas noticeably distinct from the others. Rhythmically enticing, Entgeist are a whirlwind of controlled chaos punishing the listener with a studied craftmanship. "Imperfektion" is a dizzying attack. Dense in its construction, the song breathes with a full creative urgency. All the ideas are fueled with a dark intent. The bridge offers a emotive quiet break before building back into a rage. Ending strong with an assault of blackened hatred. The fifth track, "Lethargie weicht Wut" (Lethargy Gives Way to Anger) has one of my favorite starts. The idea also returns later in the track. Weaving a web of dreariness that ensnares the listener, Entgeist are masters of their detailed approach to perfected hostility. "Fatigue" is a short instrumental interlude that allows a break to bring a sense of varied movement within the album. The next track, "Fassade" explodes into a frightful existence. From there the song transitions into melody and horror-fueled significance. Encompassing the eventual oncoming dusk moves to calmer areas before returning to the chaos. "Ein Flammenmeer" (A Sea Of Flames) has a demented start relying on dissonance. Blowing in on death-fueled winds the song begins to construct itself as an ominous entity, Swept away in its futile gusts, the listener is captured within their own mortality. Next, "Verwelkt" (Withered) dances with a devilish twisting of limbs. Contorting with each symptom of possession, the song represents an erratic trip into madness. All the while, it still retains the personality present throughout the rest of the album. My favorite part is the bridge section at 3:45 that hits hard. The track winds down to a sound that isn't quite as adventurous, though still amazing, as the rest of the song. Lastly, "Funkenspiel" (google translated: Play Of Sparks) begins quietly before evolving into a mid-paced feel. The song is a powerful display of the bold capabilities of Entgeist. Every aspect embraced showcases the talent thar resides in the band. Captivatingly emotional yet still brutal in its own way.

Highly Recommended.
