ENSANGUINATE- Death Saturnalia
Release Date: February 6th, 2026
Soulseller Records
"Death Saturnalia" is the second album by Ensanguinate after the release of "Eldritch Anatomy" in 2022. They are a Slovenian band playing occult black/death metal paying hommage to the classics of the genre. About their new album the band states, "'Death Saturnalia' is a monument to the female form in occultism, a topic so multifaceted it demanded a broadened musical palette; our metal of death now burns with even more zeal for the old ways and is bolstered by a dose of '70s mysticism and black metal fury. Join us in our fanatical ode to the burning love of Kali - Ereshkigal - Lilith."
After the dark piano driven beginning of "Lámia" the band erupts with the first full band awakening of "Angel of a Thousand Poisons". Blistering melodic blackened sounds are encompassed with grit and fury right away. Anger spews forth with a well crafted maniacal execution. Throughout the song, subtler melodic ideas are also interlaced to vary their overall sound. Punishing all with war-like precision the album continues with, "On Wings of Bone". Relentless and fierce, Ensanguinate propels forward the devoted of all that is sinister. Concrete in its substance but not too polished in the delivery. The spirit remains true to their intended old-school audience. "Rooted in Accursed Ground" screams of torturous calamity. The un-pure focus maliciously on their targets, intended on fulfilling murderous impulses. Restless and angerly driven with their incandescent performance. Next, "Savage Hunger Far Beyond" vigorously batters as previous tracks already have. Captivating the listener with baleful sounds, Ensanguinate are at home in an intended sonic ugliness that furthers an entrenchment into madness. "Gloaming" has a more mid paced feel than the previous track. Standing out for me is a dual guitar part starting at 1:04. The two parts work simultaneously in a macabre dance fueling accessibility yet still retaining some wickedness. The piano returns momentarily on, "The Whip and the Pendulum" building to the eventual lashing out of anger fueled malice. Wonderfully raw in vintage tribulation, the song also features an array of sounds with the addition of mellow parts and an organ. Erected here is a massive 9:04 song that showcases a diversity in composition skills unveiling talent and competence. The album ends with "Daughter to Cain". Hostile in its sound as with previous tracks the band is unwavering with violent intention. Some melodious elements do make an appearance, but mostly the song retains the magnificent vileness previously heard. Ensanguinate are a much needed band in a world of musical sterility hindered by un-soulful mediocrity. This is an excellent release.
