Degenerate - Rituals Of Rage
Release Date: May 23rd, 2025
Self-Released
Degenerate is a thrash/death metal band from the Netherlands. The band was started in 2016 by the vocalist, Rens Hilgers. After their successful debut e.p. was recorded with drummer Melle Kramer a full lineup was sought to further the advancement of the band. Upon the creation of Degenerate as a live entity they brought their ferocity to the stage with other fellow Dutch metal bands. In 2019 their debut album,
"Devastation Ahead" was released and allowed the band to tour and reach a larger audience. Now in 2025 they are releasing their 2nd album, "Rituals Of Rage", that was a result of perseverance through the global pandemic and other difficulties that affect us all.
This album is a crash-course in the perfect melding of melodic death metal and thrash metal that was massive in the late 1990's and early 2000's. Tight in performance and memorable in song construction, Degenerate are reliving that exciting time of the classic greats of their genre 20 years ago. The guitars are a driving force as they should be on "Rituals Of Rage". As a whole they assume the exciting thrash element while accompanied by blistering drums and the mid-range screams thrash can be known for. In addition to everything else, the backdrop of keyboards are used to fill out certain sections of songs to keep things forward moving and interesting. I enjoy the resurgence of bands that are putting the song first again among the sometimes tiresome over-the-top technicality some metal possesses. This is an album interesting enough for us who have been around for a bit and thoroughly exhilarating for those new to it all. Like a breath of fresh air, "Rituals Of Rage" casts new life into a style that may not be new but still deserves recognition among those who love the extreme. I very much recommend this album for fans of classic melodic death metal. Favorite track of the album is for sure, "Illuminate". The song starts off with a strong ear-catching guitar riff before seamlessly evolving into a forward moving melodic, yet aggressive masterpiece full of all the best elements of the style.
