Centinex - With Guts and Glory
Release Date: November 7th, 2025
Black Lion Records
For anyone that has been around for a bit following death metal, Centinex should be a known name for you. They got their start in 1990 and since have released soon to be 12 albums. From a fan of the band, these albums have been a diverse array of many different styles within the extreme music genre. From old-school sounding Swedish death metal to sounds that carry thrash elements as well. After eight albums the band split in 2005 and came back in 2014. The albums in their modern era include, "Redeeming Filth" (2014) (Agonia Records), "Doomsday Rituals" (2016), and Death in Pieces (2020). They also recorded the "Pestilence EP" (2022) to finish their relationship with the previous label.
On the newest release, "With Guts and Glory" the band states, “This record is about pleasing ourselves first and foremost,” and, “We didn’t try to chase trends or expectations. We simply wrote the music we love. Heavy, intense, and with no apologies.” They went on to say, “There will always be fans longing for the past and we understand that, but the same way they should understand that we don’t want to do the same album over and over again. Exploring different paths and directions is something Centinex has always been about, and we will continue with that as long as the band exists.”
"Becoming" is an attitude driven opener with a slight punk sound. Driving their sound with a hostile attack, Centinex parade venomous intentions without compromise. Next, "Your Religion Dies Tonight" continues with an angry disposition. They do not shy away from their death/punk assault on listeners. "Gods of Guilt" steps down the pace some with a "death n' roll" feel. While they focus on memorable chord progressions they still retain a heaviness that relies on a more traditional rock song feel. The fourth track, "Masterpiece in Flesh" carries on with the punk sound present on the first few tracks of "With Guts and Glory". Charging ahead with a defiance that finds its charm in a raw simplicity that only this style can possess. "I Am the Way" takes their craft further and incorporates a fast-paced thrash sound. Its a well placed track that adds a diverse inflamed onslaught to keep the album fresh. Continuing on, "In my Dreams" is another strike at the heart of modern metal sterility. Its a combative reminder of the bloody beginnings of the classic death/thrash metal genre. "Symphony of Screams is a return to the "death n' roll" sound of "Gods of Guilt". The song still retains enough confrontational elements to drive their angry intentions. The last song, "Sorrowtears" finishes the album strong with a belligerent and rebellious sound. Combining elements from death metal, punk and thrash they focus their attention on ambushing the weak.
As stated earlier, Centinex has seen an evolution in their sound over the course of their long history. I can respect their desire to try new things to keep the music fresh. I was a fan of the band before, it started with the "Reflections" album and was solidified with "Hellbrigade". Since then I have made a point of acquiring all their other material. Do the same and take in all that the band has to offer.
