Cancervo - III
Release Date: March 29th, 2024
Electric Valley Records
Cancervo play in the style of one of my most loved genres. I've had an attraction to the slow and heavy styles of doom metal since I was a teenager many years ago. The name of the band is derived from a mountain near Bergamo, Italy that has traditions and folklore attributed to it. On this album, Italian doom band Cancervo have created an almost trance like sound. All the expected elements of doom metal are present with the addition of their hypnotic song structures. The band has been developing their vocals over the past two releases. On their third album the vocals are even more present. I would say the charm of Cancervo is prominent mostly in their instrumentation. Hazy in its sound and varied with occasional short-lived outbursts of aggression, III is an admirable take on doom in general.
Cancervo writhes with a crawling pace and is inspired by obvious murky motivations. The only complaint I have of the album is that it is shorter with only five songs and 33 minutes of music. If you enjoy doom metal as I do I can recommend this band. I admire that they can turn simplicity into a compelling experience.
