BEZDAN - Upon The Altar
Release Date: November 29th, 2025
I Hate Records
Bezdan (Croatian for "Abyss") are a Croatian thrash metal band that will soon release its first full length album. They got their start 15 years ago
and have already released a few singles and e.p.s. They are inspired by the classic sounds of underground 80's thrash and death metal. Bands such as Possessed, old-Death, and classic Sepultura are listed as inspirations. Also included are, "old Ex-Yugoslav heroes HELLER, EVIL BLOOD and a touch of Black/Speed Metal."
"Upon The Altar" is a short introduction to the rest of the album. It sets an old-school thrash feel that is carried throughout the rest of the album. "Sacrificial Death" is a pummeling ode to times when metal was perhaps a bit more pure and heartfelt. Raw and unforgiving, you can feel the aggression from that time seeping from all the attributes of the song. The speed, production and delivery here are everything that the 80's did well in the genre. The third track, "Dark Messiah" is an apocalyptic onslaught of unrelenting barbaric precision. The verse stands out for me as a strong point before heading into the blasphemy of the chorus. It is catchy and an album favorite for me. "When Death Becomes Your Life" strikes with malicious fury. Without compromising the hostility previously achieved they continue with their declaration of war. No warning, just a blood splattered aftermath of unhinged hatred. Next, "Endless Fields Of Bones" has a slightly slower tempo to start. Perhaps a short breath before the search for survivors starts. A vast wasteland of stretches out before them, the fallout of raging madness. Death is certain and time will tell how long the last moments of a spared reprieve will last. "Vengeance" is a continuous channeling of inflamed classic metallic madness. Punishing and unrelenting in the band's quest to conquer the meek. "Infernal Howls" is another catchy track. Gazing upon the gore that decorates their surroundings, the aptly provided soundtrack adds to its violent glorification. Untiring, Bezdan aren't finished until they can effectively bask in the blood-stained landscape. Skinned after an unbridled slaughter, the last song Crypts Of Ancient is a welcoming finality to those subjected to Bezdan's fierce attack. In the blackened corridors the dead settle into a maddening eternity. Suffering even after death when they join the vast quantity of bodies stripped of life, but subject to eternal torment in spirit.
There has been many bands that have tried to capture the essence of vintage metal. Few bands have so successfully done so as Bezdan has.
