Ataraxie - Le Déclin
Release Date: October 25th, 2024
Ardua Music & Weird Truth Productions
Ataraxie are not a new name for anyone that follows doom/death metal. I currently own a copy of their album titled, "Slow Transcending Agony" and thought it was an excellent representation of the doom/death metal genre. On "Le Déclin" they continue with their woeful and smothering approach to a genre that I love. Following the decelerated oppressiveness we all love doom for, Ataraxie cater to the dreariness that fans of the genre crave. They are varied and layered enough to bring an interestingly uneasy listen on "Le Déclin". Quiet melodic passages are interwoven thoughtfully on this album with heavy turns of devastating metallic changes. They choose to increase the speed occasionally to add diversity to their sound and make the slower passages hit harder. There are influences present also of old-school death metal that fit well within their sound. The songs on this release are longer and similar in length to many funeral doom bands. I wouldn't quite classify them as a funeral doom metal band though. I appreciate the care that bands such as this put into the experience of their music. Occasionally the genre can lose a listener in tediousness. Ataraxie are a band that represents the genre with certainty. This is Ataraxie's fifth album since their founding in 2000. The lyrics transcend typical topics and include ideas on, "manipulation and obfuscation of the masses, the cult of selfishness, dehumanization towards a parasiting virtual life" and, "global warming insolubility". If doom/death metal is your thing, Ataraxie assuredly produce quality music in the genre.
