Amen Corner - Written By The Devil
Release Date: June 7th, 2024
Hammerheart Records
Amen Corner are a cult Brazilian black metal band that has been in existence for 30 years. They have been enjoying their well earned status among other greats from their country. "Written By The Devil" shares both elements of classic metal and black metal from the late 80's and early 1990's. Embodied in this album is a charm that bands from their era are able to capture due to the roots they grew out of. An element that I enjoy from this album is their ability to slow the song down to convey an emotion sometimes lost during incessant speeds. The vocals on this album are have more in common with classic black/thrash metal instead on the screams many modern black metal bands possess. Musically the rest of the band chooses to opt for an effective toned-down delivery of their playing. Because of this, the overall song doesn't get lost among over-the-top instrument acrobatics. I do enjoy the bassist stepping outside his minimum requirements and adding further melodic ideas to the songs. The album artwork is stunning and comparable to classic death and black metal albums from the early 1990's. Marcos Miller from Nausea Image was responsible for its creation and is a well-known Brazilian artist. Written By The Devil would find a home among those from the old scenes and the newcomers that embrace it. This is an excellent release that continues to solidify their long-running blackened campaign.
