Acolythus - Unearthly Kingdoms 'Neath Lifeless Stars
Release Date: May 8th, 2026
Inverse Records
Acolythus are a black metal band from Finland that combine a no-frills violent approach to black metal with the melodic elements that the country is known for. The band features members from: Convulse, Sargassus and Jotungrav. The intention was to create something that channeled their black metal inspirations. In modern times music can be stripped of life due to excessive editing and other technological manipulations. They state: "the listener will only hear real instruments being played by real people - free of all edits and tricks that dominate the modern metal sound." The themes present in their music focuses on, "esoteric and occult knowledge, as well as a somewhat misanthropic and post-apocalyptic focus on humanity." Musical inspirations for this creation is derived from such notable bands as, Alghazanth, Immortal, and Emperor.
Ominous tones open the album with "Among The Ruins Forlorn" with murmuring of perhaps a demonic entity. The music begins with "Scholars Of Empires Beyond". This is a cold trip through sullen landscapes frost-bitten with oncoming death. Straightforward in its delivery with subtle melodic elements, it still retains a raw brutality that drives an ongoing war. "As The Slaughtered Wizards Reincarnate" has a call to arms sound at the start creating a dark urgency that is not as driving as the previous track. Evolving further into dismal territories, the vastness of wintery demise spreads out through an aural portraiture. Moving effortlessly between monumental ideas that end in a coherent display of black metal majesty. The fifth track, "Vacuous Gods Of The Abyss" strikes hard at the onset, viciously stripping flesh from bone. Furiously assaulting those waiting for the frozen abyss of eternal slumber. A harnessed hatred that continuously flows through the veins of hooded entities plotting savage termination. The title track, "Unearthly Kingdoms 'Neath Lifeless Stars" has a wonderfully murky opening that relies on a melodious idea. It then transforms into a winding construction that showcases the bands bleak craft with confidence. Solidifying their talent in a frigid presentation of metallic superiority. "In The Fading Light of Burning Cathedrals" ends this album. A mid-paced idea starts the song with a blustery sonic wind that ensnares the listener in a wall of snowy wastelands. Full-force raids then ensue. Moving between slight relief and ongoing invasions, the song stands strong with its various intertwining ideas. Existing in desolation, Acolythus created an exciting album that seizes the attention of those fans of the genre such as me.
