Abysmal Winds - MAGNA PESTILENCIA
Release Date - June 21st, 2024
I Hate Records
Abysmal Winds are a Swedish death metal band that have released their debut album, Magna Pestilencia on I Hate Records.
There is a darkness present on their album that is almost a direct attack on all the overly-polished modern death metal. It states that they are inspired such bands as Incantation. I can hear similarities to Incantation's earlier material for sure. Both bands don't journey too far from their intended sound. The charm of Magna Pestilencia is it's consistency. Abysmal Winds find their sound among the tonal grime and filth that they spray ruthlessly against the walls. Like many impressive bands from the old-school, they know what they want musically and they ferociously achieve it. I won't say that Abysmal Winds reinvented the death metal in unique ways. What they have done is assertively honed sounds from the past. The intro track, "Incantation", is a neat macabre sounding melodic number that leads well into the bombardment that "Sacrilegious" entails. The rest of the tracks have a appealing contamination that grows continually after the initial listen. Formed in 2020, Abysmal Winds are in their formative stages. I am excited to see how the band progresses after this release. Go support them.
